Reviewing Lamborghini Centenario, the mighty beast from 2016

Lamborghini's are persistent with their astoundingly beautiful and performance exorbitant exotic super-cars. Recently released Lamborghini Centenario made its debut last year in 2016, on the vary occasion of 100th anniversary of Lambo's Founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, Lamborghini Centenario was unveiled in Geneva Motor show. In fact, Centenario is an Italian word which means Centenary in English, which ipso facto means 100th anniversary. Basically, Lamborghini Centenario is a hypercar.

This car replaced the crown of Lamborghini Veneno, and belongs to the family of Aventador family, besides Centenario is longer than the Aventador, but much lighter in weight. This is evident by the fact that most of the parts like body, chassis, wheels (originally made of aluminium yet carbon fibre is used), interiors of this vehicle are made of carbon-fibre. Refined interiors made of carbon fibre gives sporty feel. The Centenario weigh 1520 kg while Aventador weigh 1575 kg (dry weight). Obviously this car has sharper looks than the Aventador's. Surely, Centenario looks like a combination of Aventador and Veneno.

The Centenario's aerodynamics are much different than the Aventador and much likely the same as Veneno. These consists of air intakes placed at every possible location specially on the front part of the vehicle, below the headlights, bumpers, hood, and also at the wheel arches. Rear side of the vehicle is covered with one of the largest diffuser you can find on a Le Mans race-car. This car is also equipped with an active spoiler (rear wing) which produces a massive downforce equivalent to 227 kg (499 lbs) at 174 mph (300 kph). Well, Veneno had a non-adjusting rear wing, Centenario is equipped with and active rear wing.

Interiors of Lamborghini Centenario housing 10.1" centre console screen and large driver's display

Well, as stated earlier, interiors of this hyper car are built using carbon fibre. Driver's instrumentation consist of a large LCD which gives most of the information. Centre console is equipped with a 10.1" display (equivalent to an iPad screen) which can be utilised for in-car-entertainment and record vehicle telemetry as well as driving data like lap time, gear shifts and selection, throttle inputs, break points and much more. This infotainment system is newly developed by Lamborghini which makes Centenario a connected car. Lamborghini had completely vanished all the sophisticated interior elements and merged them into a more refined and adaptable aid.

Centenario houses V12 engine placed in the rear-mid of the car

Lamborghini Centenario is packed with 6.5L V12 engine producing massive 770 PS (749 hp, 19 hp up from Aventador SV) and 690 N-m of torque at 5,500 rpm. During the time of release, officials told that this is the most powerful engine they have ever produced and also this engine is naturally aspirated. It means that it does not get any help from any turbocharger, supercharger or any electric motor, still it can accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) in just 2.8 seconds and 0-186 mph (0-300 kph) in 23.5 seconds. It has a top speed of 217 mph (350 kph). Engine is almost same, taken from Aventador SV, but it produce 20 hp more. This was achieved by extending the redline from 8,350 rpm to 8,600 rpm. This Lamborghini utilises a 4 wheel drive system, which is capable of delivering this amount of  high acceleration and stability.

Not only the rear wing which produces nearly 2.25 Quintal equivalent of downforce, rear diffuser, refined suspension and 4-wheel steering also adds a ton of stability to the car. This is the first car which is equipped with such technology manufactured by the Lamborghini. It utilises the turning of rear wheels opposite to the front wheel at low speeds to ensure the minimum turn radius and rear wheels turn in the same direction when car is sprinting at high speeds. This subtracts 9.8 inches and adds 19.7 inches, depending upon the speed from the actual length of wheelbase. Despite saving a sustainable weight as compared to the Aventador, rear wheel drive system adds a considerable amount of mass hence giving around a difference 55 kg in mass.

Centenario captured in motion

Lamborghini Centenario feels very quick and stable in the corners, thanks to its all new rear wheel drive system and suspensions, also, no one can forget the contribution of the rear wing producing huge downforce, which almost feels like sitting in an F1 car. Aerodynamics system in synchronicity with all wheel steering system are the real revolutionaries. While exiting a corner with speed, the car seems to be continue to slide but the aerodynamics will come in game, gluing the car with the road. Single clutch shifts are a bit quicker and less violent than the Aventador SV, and the V12 beast is really-really loud. At low speeds (like 50 mph), the car feels like being under-steered at corners. Overall speaking, Lamborghini Centenario is a balanced, stable and cheerful ride experience.

The real problem is that, this car is only built for 40 customers, which already attracted its buyers even before the car was showcased. Well, this made it a limited edition car just like the Lamborghini Veneno. Centenario is available in variety of colors and trims, consisting a ton of customisation. Out of the 40 Centenarios, 20 made were coupes and another 20 were roadsters, priced at 1.9 million $ (USD).

Lamborghini has decided to use its rear wheel drive system which is currently being utilised by the Centenario in the upcoming Aventador.
